Micro School

Small Class Size

A microschool is a deliberately small learning environment, with typical class sizes anywhere from 5-10 students, operating outside of the traditional school system.

Microschools are sometimes described as a halfway point between traditional schooling and homeschooling, but for many families, enrolling in a microschool is essentially enrolling in a very small private school.

There is abundant research indicating that smaller classes mean educators have more opportunity to give students individual attention. Smaller classes improve student behaviour and peer relationships and increase student engagement and achievement. These factors, in turn, contribute to increased student success.

Small class sizes can have many benefits for students, including:

  • Improved learning: Students learn more and faster in smaller classes. Teachers can spend more time teaching and less time trying to regain attention.
  • Better relationships: Students can form stronger peer relationships and connect with their classmates. They can also develop more confidence and feel more comfortable sharing their ideas.
  • More individual attention: Teachers can give more individual attention to students, which can help students stand out and achieve academic success.
  • Improved behavior: Students’ behavior can improve in smaller classes.
  • More opportunities to participate: Students have more opportunities to speak up in class.
  • Increased engagement: Students are more engaged in learning in smaller classes.

Reducing class size makes intuitive sense: Decreasing the teacher-student ratio increases teacher-student interaction, which together increases student learning.

Working in small groups encourages students to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from one another. This collaborative learning environment not only helps students understand the material better but also fosters essential social and communication skills.
